Welcome to Mill House Stud
2007 was an exciting year, both on the racecourse and in the sale ring for Mill House Stud. The highlight on the racecourse was the success of the home bred I'MSINGINTHEBLUES by Pistolet Bleu out of Nova Rose. Sold as a foal at Doncaster for 18000gns he was bought by Aiden Murphy on behalf of John Hales in who's colours he now runs. He gamely won the GRADE 2 NOVICES HURDLE at Cheltenham in November and is now one of the favourites for the SUPREME NOVICES HURDLE at Cheltenham in March.
He is the second foal out of Nova Rose, who was unbeated in 2 starts over hurdles for Juliet and Clarissa Daly. She has a 4 year old filly FLUTTERBYE by Alflora who was 4th in her first bumper at Newbury in December. Her 3 year old by Definite Article is with Howard Johnson and she has a 2 year old by Luso at Mill House Stud. She is back in foal once again to Definite Article and is due to visit Presenting.
On the sales front, theTattersalls December Sale was a particular highlight of 2007 with the bay colt foal by PIVOTAL out of TIRIANA making 240 000gns. He was purchased by John Ferguson on behalf of Sheik Mohammed with Antony Stroud on behalf of Coolmore being the underbidders.. He is the 7th foal out of the COMMON GROUNDS mare TIRIANA who has been such a wonderful servant to the stud. She has already bred PENKENNA PRINCESS, SALUT ST CLOUD and MYSTERY OCEAN (who is being retained by the stud and visiting Acclamation). Her 3 year old filly by Kyllachy, DIVINE POWER has been placed as a 2 year old and has returned into training with Ralph Beckett. TIRIANA is now in foal to Medicean and is due to visit Excellent Art this season.
The Doncaster May Sale was the first major sale of 2007 with Mill House selling 26 three and four year old stores. The main highlights were Mrs Caroline Brooke's three year old grey gelding by Take Risks who sold for 100 000gns and Wilf Tolhurst's 3 year old gelding by Rochesson who sold for 80 000gns. ( See 2007 sales section for full details) Both of these were purchased by Eddie O'Leary on behalf of Michael O'Leary (Gigginstown Stud) of Ryan Air fame. They have been very lucky with Mill House purchases owning both the grade one winner KILL DEVIL HILL and DRUNKEN DISORDERLY who was a very useful novice chaser in Ireland this season. The Take Risks and the Rochesson were both purchased as yearlings by Minty from Deauville October sales, a sale he has been particularly fortunate at. The market for stores has been very selective like the rest of the market place and a large number of horses have already been put forward for the 2008 store sales. One will have to be very selective indeed and try and place the stores in the correct sales. Brightwells at Cheltenham in April Doncaster Spring Sales in May (stores now a week later after horses in training sale) Goffs Landrover Sales in June The Derby Sale, Fairyhouse now starting on Wednesday 25th June. The second division will go to Doncaster and Fairyhouse in August. The breeding stock sale was a marathon and Mill House took a large draft of National Hunt broodmares to the final day. The top class mares all sold really well. LADY CAD in foal to Turgeon made 230000 euros, she was bought by Albert Sherwood on behalf of a client. REALLY ROYALE in foal to Kalanisi made 170000 euros. The very popular SENORITA RUMBALITA in foal to Presenting made 160000 euros. EBONY QUEEN daughter of Queen of Spades and in foal to Definite Article made 85000 euros and LINE GREY dam of the ill fated Granite Jack made 75000 euros, she is in foal to Robin des Champs. Unlike previous years, some of the lesser mares with good coverings barely made the price of the stallion nomination. This shows the state of the market with the problem of over production.
